Rains in Bahia: state government confirms 10 deaths and 267 injuries

According to the latest update by the Civil Defense and Protection Superintendence of the State of Bahia, 10 people died and 267 were injured after heavy rains that have hit the south of the state since last week.

Also according to the Superintendence, 220,297 people were affected by the storms. Among them, 15,199 were left homeless and 6,371 homeless.

At least 51 cities in Bahia are in an emergency situation. The federal government recognizes emergencies in 17 cities in the state.

By the state government, they are: Alcobaça, Amélia Rodrigues, Anagé, Baixa Grande, Belmonte, Boa Vista do Tupim, Camacan, Canavieiras, Caravelas, Cocos, Encruzilhada, Eunapolis, Guaratinga, Iaçu, Ibicoara, Ibicuí, Ibirapuã, Ilhéus, Itabela, Itapebi, Itaberaba, Itacaré, Itagimirim, Itamaraju, Itambé, Itanhém, Itapetinga, Itaquara, Itarantim, Jaguaquara, Jiquiriçá, Jucuruçu, Lajedão, Macarani, Maragogipe, Marcionilio de Souza, Mascot, Medeiros Nova, Mucupe, Mucupe Porto Seguro, Prado, Ribeira do Pombal, Ruy Barbosa, Santa Cruz Cabrália, Santanópolis, Teixeira de Freitas, Teolândia and Vereda.

In an interview with CNN, Climatempo meteorologist Desirée Brandt explained that a series of factors led to the formation of storms in the region, such as the influence of La Niña.

According to the specialist, more than 500mm of rain was recorded in the region of the municipality of Itamaraju. According to Inmet, the average rainfall in this region throughout the month of December is, at most, 150mm.

Brandt explained that the forecast is for less rain in the region this week.

On Sunday (12), President Jair Bolsonaro flew over the affected areas in Bahia.

The Special Secretariat for Social Communication (Secom) reported via Twitter that an additional R$5.8 million were made available by the federal government in support of the affected municipalities.
