Rains in Bahia: the number of deaths from floods rises to 25

The number of deaths rose to 25 as a result of the floods that hit various regions of Bahia. The information comes from the State Civil Defense and Protection Superintendence (Sudec), based on data received from city halls.

This Thursday (30), the death of a 45-year-old man was confirmed, who drowned in the district of Rio do Braço, in the rural area of ​​the municipality of Ilhéus.

In addition to the deaths confirmed so far, the numbers of homeless people have reached 37,035, and 54,771 homeless, in addition to 517 injured. The total number of people affected exceeds 643,000 people.

Of the 163 municipalities affected by the rains, 152 declared an emergency situation. In addition to São Félix do Coribe and Ubaitaba, 11 other cities recorded deaths as a result of the floods.

This Thursday, President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) spoke after Brazil refused aid offered by Argentina to flood victims in Bahia. through the Twitter, Bolsonaro said that “the help would not be needed at the time” but that it could be accepted “in case of worsening conditions”.

After the incident, the governor of the state, Rui Costa (PT), went to social media to say that he will accept international aid even without going through the normal diplomatic channels.

Governors of 15 Brazilian states and the Federal District also announced that they will send aid to Bahian municipalities. They intend to mobilize teams specialized in rescue operations and materials to assist in the rescue of victims.
