Rains in Bahia: the number of deaths from storms rises to 26

The heavy rains in the state of Bahia have already caused 26 deaths, according to the bulletin released by the Superintendence of Civil Defense and Protection of Bahia (Sudec) this Monday (3).

Altogether, 715,634 people were affected by the storms in 166 cities. Now, 14 cities have confirmed deaths from the rains, and 154 municipalities have an emergency situation decree.

The death confirmed today refers to a 39-year-old man who drowned in the village of Sabiá, in the rural area of ​​the municipality of Belo Campo, on Thursday (30).

As for the number of people affected, Sudec reported that, in addition to deaths, there are 30,915 homeless, 62,731 homeless and 518 injured.

The cities that had confirmed deaths in the state due to the rains are: Amargosa (2), Itaberaba (2), Itamaraju (4), Jucuruçu (3), Macarani (1), Prado (2), Ruy Barbosa (1), Itapetinga (1), Ilhéus (3), Aurelino Leal (1), Itabuna (2), São Félix do Coribe (2), Ubaitaba (1) and Belo Campo (1).

In an interview with CNN this Monday (3), ClimaTempo meteorologist Carine Gama warned of storms in almost all of Brazil this week, but stated that the rains in Bahia should be weaker and concentrated in the West region, and not in the South region, more affected so far.

Last Thursday (30th), the US embassy in Brazil announced the shipment of supplies to the population of the state. Argentina also offered to send humanitarian aid to Bahia, which was denied by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil.

A day later, on Friday (31), President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) sanctioned a Provisional Measure that makes available, through the Ministry of Citizenship, R$700 million to support regions affected by the rains in Minas Gerais and Bahia.
