The city of Santa Tereza, in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul, no longer knows how many people are homeless or in places at risk due to the tragic rains that have hit Rio Grande do Sul in recent days.
The municipality is on the banks of the Taquari River, which in the last few hours has increased in volume due to the collapse of part of the 14 de Julho dam .
City residents reported to the CNN that, with no way to reach the risk areas – as the streets are flooded –, the city hall has warned of the dam collapse using loudspeakers. The recommendation is for the population to look for higher places to protect themselves, as the river level is higher due to the break.
“The feeling is that everything has gotten out of control,” said a resident who still had access to the internet.
The dam collapse, early this Thursday afternoon (2), was announced by Governor Eduardo Leite. The authorities expect the river to rise 2 to 4 meters by this Friday (3).
“The effect will not be one of devastation, of a flood, but there will be a free flow of the Taquari River from Cotiporã, Santa Bábara and then towards Santa Tereza.” said the governor.
