Rains in RS: 336 cities in Rio Grande do Sul are in a state of public calamity

The National Secretariat for Protection and Civil Defense of the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development published new ordinancepublished in an extra edition Official Diary of the Unionthis Sunday (6), changing the previous act and expanding the recognition of the state of public calamity to 336 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul due to the intense rains that hit the region.

In a previously published Ordinance, the federal government had recognized the state of calamity in 265 municipalities.

The governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (PSDB), had already declared the state of public calamity, after the sequence of storms, which flooded many municipalities.

According to the latest bulletin from the State's Civil Defense, released at 6pm yesterday, the number of deaths in Rio Grande do Sul is 78, with another four deaths being investigated. Civil Defense reported that there are 105 missing and 175 injured. In total, 18,487 people are in shelters, out of a total of 844,673 affected.

By obtaining recognition from the federal government of the state of public calamity, the State achieves greater agility in federal aid response and reconstruction actions.

Furthermore, the government can adopt administrative measures for the process of contracting goods and services necessary to help the population and restore essential services and infrastructure works, without the need for public bidding, for example.
