Rains in RS: at least 250 children are separated from their families in Canoas

The Canoas Guardianship Council, in Rio Grande do Sul, states that there are at least 250 children who have disappeared since last Friday (03), when the city began to be hit by floods.

The agency clarifies that this is a disagreement between the families, due to the direction of the flood victims. The rescues carried out by Civil Defense teams and security forces took the victims to several unregistered shelters and, often, separated from other family members.

The municipality of Canoas has 61 shelters, where there are people of all ages who had to leave their homes. Due to the emergency situation of the rescues, the victims were distributed in points closer to the routes of the following rescues and there was no registry of homeless people linked to their respective families, that is, children and adolescents were housed in shelters other than their guardians, without identification.

As of Monday night (06), 250 children were declared missing by their parents to the Child Protection Council. The agency still believes that children may have been taken to other cities in the state. CNN requested a position from the city hall and Civil Defense and is awaiting feedback.

Canoas City Hall released a report on social media this Monday afternoon (06) so that people who provided space to shelter victims of the flood can register. More than 16 thousand people living in the city were in areas hit by heavy rain and were taken to municipal shelters.

The water advanced over 60% of Canoas. The estimate is that more than 180,000 people have been affected in the municipality, according to City Hall. There were 63,800 requests for rescue and help and more than 3,600 volunteers working in the city.
