The National Center for Natural Disaster Monitoring and Alerts (Cemaden) issued a warning about the possibility of worsening the flooding situation in Rio Grande do Sul.
According to Jorge Barbarotto, hydrologist at Cemaden, the rupture of the dam on July 14th This could result in a new wave of runoff, further raising river levels already affected by heavy rain.
Barbarotto explained that, although the dam is smaller than large reservoirs such as Itaipu, the release of dammed water tends to intensify flood levels in nearby municipalities, such as Santa Bárbara, Santa Tereza, Muçum and Encantado .
Critical situation in affected municipalities
Several municipalities monitored by Cemaden had already received flood warnings even before the dam broke. With river levels exceeding maximum limits, the situation is expected to worsen further. The hydrologist highlighted that the ongoing process in Rio Grande do Sul is classified as floods, not floods, although the magnitude of the event is extremely serious and unprecedented in the state.
Continuous monitoring
While maximum alerts have already been issued by Cemaden, the team continues to monitor the situation and provide updated information through the press. The objective is to keep the population informed about possible impacts and guide actions to respond to natural disasters.
