A balance released by the government of Rio Grande do Sul in the early afternoon of this Friday (12) shows that the number of deaths due to the heavy rains that hit the state since the beginning of the week rose to 37. In total, 235 municipalities were affected.
In addition to the deaths, the state reports 74 injured, and another 74 missing. In total, 351,639 people were affected by the storms in Rio Grande do Sul, with 23,598 homeless and 7,949 in shelters.

Last Thursday (2) there was a partial collapse of a dam in Serra Gaúcha, located between the municipalities of Bento Gonçalves, Cotiporã and Veranópolis. This Friday, the state government reported that four dams in Rio Grande do Sul are at emergency level.
Rio Grande do Sul is still under warning of great danger due to accumulated rain. The alert is from the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) and is valid until noon next Saturday (4).
According to the institute, there is “a great risk of major flooding and river overflows, major landslides”.
Until 8 am this Friday, the city of Erechim had recorded an accumulated volume of rain of 150.8 millimeters in 24 hours. In Frederico Westphalen, the accumulated amount was 135.8 millimeters.
In Santa Catarina, the city of Campos Novos also recorded an accumulation of more than 100 millimeters. There were 127.4 millimeters of rain in 24 hours. The municipality is approximately 35 kilometers, as the crow flies, from the border with Rio Grande do Sul.
Porto Alegre
According to the official Civil Defense report, no deaths have yet been recorded in Porto Alegre. The capital of Rio Grande do Sul records major flooding after the overflow of Lake Guaíba.
This Friday, one of the lake's floodgates broke, putting neighborhoods located in the north of Porto Alegre at risk. The capital has been in a state of public calamity since Thursday.
