The city of Porto Alegre declared, on Thursday night (2), a state of public calamity in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul. Rio Grande do Sul is facing historic rain that has already left 29 dead and 60 missing.
The municipal administration's decree classifies the climate disaster as of great intensity. In practice, the measure authorizes the city hall to use all resources and volunteers to assist the population and restore services.
According to State Civil Defense projections, Guaíba is expected to surpass the 1941 flood, reaching 5 meters in the late afternoon of this Friday (3). The southern regions of Porto Alegre, Barra do Ribeiro, Guaíba, Eldorado do Sul and the Guaíba islands are expected to be hardest hit.
According to the last measurement released by City Hall, the river was already at 3.37 meters.
The Porto Alegre Civil Defense released a new alert indicating the possibility of extreme rains continuing until 12pm next Monday (6).
“We are operating uninterruptedly throughout the city, but we ask for special attention from the population of the Historic Center and the 4th District. Avoid commuting. The Guaíba is advancing and, despite the closure of the Cais Mauá floodgates, there is the possibility of flooding in this area”, warned Mayor Sebastião Melo (MDB).
According to the Social Assistance and Citizenship Foundation (Fasc), 304 people are sheltered in temporary shelters.
Classes in municipal schools will remain suspended today (3), according to the Municipal Department of Education (Smed), and the on-call regime will be maintained to welcome students who need it.
In total, 31 health services were impacted by the rain and rise of Guaíba. Of these, ten interrupted activities and 21 operated with restrictions. The Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) team provides support to the Federal Highway Police (PRF) in air medical rescues for flood victims.
