The dam at the 14 de Julho plant, in Serra Gaúcha, had a partial failure on Thursday afternoon (2) due to the high volume of water received after the heavy rains that have hit Rio Grande do Sul since the beginning of the week.
According to the mayor of Bento Gonçalves, Diego Segabinazzi Siqueira, the rupture generated a 2 meter high wave that hit the municipality and went on to neighboring cities, such as São Valentim do Sul and Santa Tereza.
In an interview with CNN Siqueira stated that it is not yet possible to have an exact idea of the consequences of the rupture, as there are several areas of the municipality that could not be accessed.
Where is the dam
The 14 de Julho dam is located in Serra Gaúcha. On the right bank, there are the municipalities of Cotiaporã and Veranópolis. On the left bank is the city of Bento Gonçalves.
The structure is located on the Antas River and is 28 km from the center of Bento Gonçalves and 150 km from the state capital, Porto Alegre.

According to Companhia Energética Rio das Antas (Ceran), which is responsible for the operation, the plant has a maximum daily flow of 7,207 cubic meters per second and its maximum normal reservoir level is 104 meters.
