Rains in RS: storms block highways and leave cities isolated

The storms that hit Rio Grande do Sul in recent days left a trail of destruction, with 48 sections of federal highways completely or partially blocked. Of this total, 31 are expected to be released within 48 hours.

According to the reporter from CNN Nathalia Lauxen, some cities were isolated due to the blockades. In Lajeado, one of the most affected, residents face queues at gas stations and supermarkets, fearing possible shortages.

Panic and despair in Lajeado

Nathalia reported that people are “running against time” to secure essential supplies such as food, water and fuel. “We see this desperation, this panic happening here in Lajeado,” she said.

Furthermore, there are reports of people stranded on rooftops awaiting rescue for almost 48 hours in neighboring cities such as Estrela, Roio do Meio and Cruzeiro. Efforts are focused on air rescues.

The Taquari River, which runs through the region, remains very high, with a level of 29.4 meters in the last measurement, and the rains are unrelenting.

Access interrupted between cities

Another serious problem is the blockage of the roads that connect Lajeado to other cities, such as the BR-386 to Estrela, which was completely taken over by water. “The Taquari Valley is practically isolated without this road being unblocked in any way,” stated Nathalia.

This situation of isolation also increases the population's fear of shortages. Furthermore, there is concern about the partial collapse of the 14 de Julho dam, which could further raise the level of the Taquari River.
