A street in the Piratini neighborhood, in Gramado, in the Serra Gaúcha region of Rio Grande do Sul, collapsed at the weekend after excessive rain caused the asphalt to give way. Residents had to leave their homes in a hurry due to the risk of the compromised structures collapsing.
At least 974 people were left homeless in the tourist city due to the heavy rainfall that has hit the state in the last 10 days. Five neighborhoods in Gramado were affected, with several houses having their foundations weakened by water infiltration.
Rugged terrain worsens the situation
The collapse occurred on Henrique Bertoluci Street, located in the noble and residential Piratini neighborhood, close to the center of Gramado. The incident reflects the risks inherent in the Serra mountainous region, where the rugged terrain and high altitudes drastically increase the possibility of landslides and slopes during periods of intense rain.
Tragically, the floods in Rio Grande do Sul have already killed 7 people in Gramado alone in the last 10 days, according to alarming data released by local authorities. The number of deaths related to landslides and floods continues to grow in the state, which is facing a severe crisis caused by the high volume of precipitation.
Rescue and social assistance teams work to provide support to the homeless and restore security in affected areas. Civil Defense recommends extra caution to the population while river levels remain high.
