Rains in RS: why the mare rescued from the 3rd floor of a building was blindfolded

A mare was isolated on the third floor of a building in a condominium in the city of São Leopoldo (RS) since Sunday (5), when her owner, Dirceu Matias, placed her in the building in an attempt to save her.

This Tuesday (14), the mare was rescued by several members of the Fire Department and volunteers. The image is moving and reminiscent of the rescue of the horse Caramelo. One detail that caught attention in the mare's rescue operation is that the animal was removed from the apartment window with the blindfolded.

A CNN the Fire Department of the Military Brigade of the State of Rio Grande do Sul said that “blindfolding the horse in this situation helps to reduce the animal's fear and anxiety, due to stress and the height at which the animal would be during the rescue operation”.

The agency also explains that the mare received light sedation, unlike the horse Caramelo, who was completely unconscious so that the transport boat would not capsize.

One of the volunteers involved in rescuing the mare was veterinarian Leonardo Henrique Duarte, who described to CNN the operation as complex and exciting due to the animal's weakened state.

The animal's owner, Dirceu Matias, told CNN The animals were initially housed on the second floor of the building, however, as the water level rose, they needed to be transferred to the third floor. Matias lives in a farm in front of the condominium, which was flooded. Therefore, the mare's owner is sheltered at the Clodomir Vanna Moog Municipal School.

Dirceu stated that he had authorization from the condominium owner to shelter the animals there. He also mentioned having managed to save his other four dogs at the start of the flood and expressed his concern, as the mare in question also belongs to his daughters.
