Rains in SP: 100 trees fall and operations at Congonhas airport are interrupted

The rains felled around a hundred trees in the city of São Paulo and at least two people were slightly injured this Sunday (19), according to information released by the São Paulo state government.

In the capital, the rain was accompanied by strong winds that caused the temporary interruption of operations at Congonhas airport.

According to forecasts, more rain showers are expected across the state. “Rainfall can vary from moderate to heavy intensity and be followed by lightning, winds and eventually hail,” the government said in a statement.

According to the government of Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), the cabinet’s work to quickly respond to the population in the event of severe damage to infrastructure or catastrophes resulting from extreme weather events continues this Sunday.

As a result of the rain, a tree fell on a car on Avenida das Nações Unidas and two people suffered minor injuries. Subprefecture teams are on site to clear the road.

The Department of Highways (DER) said that there are no blocking points on state highways at this time. “The incidents recorded due to adverse weather conditions on Saturday (18) were closed after the work of the department’s teams,” stated the department.

Sabesp reported that, due to the lack of electricity due to the rain, the pumping system was interrupted, affecting the water supply in sections of the municipalities of Embu das Artes, Taboão da Serra, Itapecerica da Serra, Rio Grande da Serra and Ribeirão Pires.

According to the company, “operational maneuvers” are being carried out to reduce the impact and directing tanker trucks to the most affected points.
