Rains in SP: the entire territory of Francisco Morato is under alert, says mayor

After heavy rains over the weekend caused landslides and left four victims in Francisco Morato, a city in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, Mayor Renata Sene (Republicans) told CNN this Monday (31) that the entire territory of the municipality remains under alert, even with the decrease in the intensity of the rains.

“It rained the equivalent of a month and a half in the last four days. The rain belongs to fine, but dangerous, because our soil is soggy”, declared Sene.

The city is one of those affected by the storms that, in total, left 21 victims throughout the state of São Paulo. According to the latest bulletin from the Civil Defense of São Paulo, there are also six injured and 11 missing.

In Francisco Morato, Renata Sene stated that the victims in the city were between 8 and 16 years old. In total, 183 calls for help were answered as a result of the rains, and 40 people are currently in shelters.

Now, the mayor says there is a work to “awareness” of the families so that they do not return at this time to the affected locations.

“There is monitoring of the return to the identified locations. There is a natural feeling that families stay in their territories and homes, but we have been raising awareness so that this does not happen,” she said.

To make it possible to quickly direct resources, the city entered a state of emergency, explained Sene, who also stressed that the donation fund that will be destined for families is “well stocked” at the moment – the most expected is the amount for “the service primary” of those affected.

According to her, the government of SP has earmarked around R$ 2 million for the actions, while the federal government has already requested the necessary documentation for an eventual remittance.

alerts

Renata Sene also stated that, as the region has already suffered from such disasters, a network of warnings was built to be sent to residents of risk areas.

According to the mayor, residents receive messages on WhatsApp and alerts are posted on City Hall’s networks and media.

“The response has been quick in terms of welcoming families. Yesterday, we started the alerts at 6 am, and in the afternoon, at 5 pm, the families were sheltered with food and social service staff”, said Sene.

“Sometimes it is so fast that unfortunately we have loss of life, and what we do is fight hard so that this does not happen and affects other families”, he said.
