Rains leave dead and homeless in the Northeast and South of the country; Alagoas is the most affected state

The Northeast of Brazil is facing large amounts of rain in recent days, which have brought consequences such as floods, landslides and overflows in several states.

Rain is common in the region at this time of year, however, the meteorological phenomenon known as “Eastern Waves” is intensifying precipitation in the area. It consists of changes in the wind and pressure field that act in the tropical belt of the terrestrial globe, generating very charged clouds on the northeast east coast.

The Federal Government recognized this Monday (4), through publication in the Official Gazette (DOU), in an ordinance National Secretariat for Civil Defense and Protection, linked to the Ministry of Regional Development, the emergency situation in 15 cities. from Alagoas, Amazonas, Bahia, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte and Santa Catarina.

“For the next 30 days it should fluctuate between strong and weak on the northeast coast, from the Bahian Recôncavo to Rio Grande do Norte,” said Climatempo meteorologist Maria Clara Sassaki, in an interview with CNN, explaining that the rains could continue until the month of August.

alagoas

One of the states most severely affected by the rains, Alagoas recorded two deaths this weekend. About 56,000 people have been affected so far by the high rainfall that has been recorded during the months of this year.

In the state, there are more than 50 municipalities in an emergency situation, and the floods also affect the capital Maceió.

In just four days of July, cities in Alagoas recorded a greater amount of rain than the average forecast for the whole month, with more than 300 mm of precipitation.

Pernambuco

Pernambuco has 29 municipalities affected by the rains, among which 15 have already sent emergency decrees, according to information from the Pernambuco Economic Development Department (Sedec).

The state’s Civil Defense Operations Center has so far registered 1,085 homeless people and 5,988 homeless people in all affected municipalities.

The Civil Defense of the state stated that it is carrying out a new survey in the affected cities, to understand the impacts of the rain in the state, according to information obtained by the reporter of the CNN Diego Barros.

The capital of Rio Grande do Norte, Natal, declared a state of calamity this Monday (4). In 12 hours, the capital recorded more than half the volume of water expected for the entire month of July, according to the National Center for Monitoring Disaster Alerts (Cemaden).

The city faced flooding, cratering, landslides, falling trees and closed buildings due to the risk of collapse.
