Rains that affected Southeast in early January should return at the turn of the month

This Monday (17), the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Florianópolis recorded their hottest days of the year. In the capital of Rio de Janeiro, the thermal sensation was close to 50ºC.

In an interview with CNN, Climatempo meteorologist Maria Clara Sassaki pointed out that the shock of these higher temperatures after a period of cold is an effect of the La Niña phenomenon.

She explains that the cooling of the waters of the Pacific Ocean impacts the atmosphere, causing the formation of humidity corridors, which leave rainy days and lower temperatures.

“When the weather clears up again, the population ends up feeling the contrast. Very high temperatures, feeling of heat very different from one week to the next,” he said.

She explained that a new humidity corridor should form at the turn of January to February. This should cause, for several days in a row, the scenario of heavy clouds and voluminous rains in the Midwest and Southeast regions, as seen at the beginning of the year.

In addition, the meteorologist points out that a cold front is trying to approach the southern region, which would reduce the effects of the heat wave that has been affecting the region. However, an atmospheric blockade prevents the arrival of the cold front.

“As long as the front is unable to break through this blockade to move towards the South/Southeast, we will continue with firmer weather and higher and higher temperatures”, commented Maria Clara.
