Heavy rains and the resulting floods in Niger have already left 21 dead and nearly 6,000 affected since late May, with the rainy season just beginning, according to figures released by an official late Thursday. “As of June 20, we have across the territory (…) 5,926 affected (and) 21 dead, including 8 drowning deaths and 13 due to house collapses,” Niger’s director general of civil protection, Colonel Boubakar Bako, told state television. Twenty-six more injuries were recorded, while 4,000 farmed animals were decimated, he added. Maradi prefecture (central-southern) was the hardest hit, with 14 deaths and 2,404 affected, Colonel Bako also said.
