Rakete Case: Trial against Matteo Salvini

New court adventure for the secretary of Lega, Matteo Salvini. The trial against the former captain of the Sea Watch 3, Carola Rakete, begins in Milan against him. This is the young woman, who on June 29, 2019 transferred 53 immigrants to Lampedusa. There they waited for two weeks to be allowed to disembark in a safe harbor. Approaching the waterfront, Rakete had collided with a speedboat of the Italian financial police and was detained for several hours.

The German captain was acquitted of all charges, but Salvini had rushed to attack her via the internet, Twitter and Facebook. He will now have to apologize to the judges of the Italian co-capital for expressions such as “this cheeky captain is pursuing a policy against a few dozen immigrants” and “she is a rich, spoiled communist”.

“Strange, I have to be tried, while a German woman shot at an Italian police boat. I do not know if the same thing could happen in Germany,” said the Lega secretary. Many commentators, however, remind him that crimes are not judged on the basis of nationality.

A difficult period politically for M. Salvini

Meanwhile, Matteo Salvini is going through a difficult phase for purely political reasons. His attempt to play a role in the Ukrainian crisis with a possible trip to Moscow at the moment has failed, and many accuse him of constant “pro-Putinism”. He insists he is only interested in ending the war, but that his choice to bet on Dmitry Medvedev as a possible interlocutor was not one of the most intelligent, given the recent statements by the former Russian president.

At the same time, the League is at 15% of the voting intention, while the far-right Brothers of Italy exceed 22%. In other words, it is clear that Salvini is in danger of losing the opportunity to lead the Italian conservative faction. Unless he convinces Silvio Berlusconi to give the green light to the merger of Forza Italy with Lega. But this would first require a clear and spectacularly moderate turn by the former Italian interior minister and head of the formerly localist “League of the North”.
