Rama disappointed with EU accession talks: “Waiting for Gondo”

With the surreal work of Samuel Beckett, “Waiting for Gondo”, described the efforts of his country, Eddie Rama Of Albania, but also those of Northern Macedonia, to join the European Union.

At yesterday’s EU General Affairs Council Bulgaria vetoes start of accession talks with two Balkan countries and the Albanian prime minister’s frustration was intense.

“This is a great disappointment and a huge failure of the European Union and a bad message for the whole region.” said the Prime Minister of Northern Macedonia, Zoran Zaef, in a press conference he gave with Rama at an economic forum in the capital Skopje.

THE Rama likened himself to him Zaef with readers of the Irish author’s work, in which two characters wait for a third character that never arrives. “But, unlike the characters of Samuel Beckett… we do not really wait, we move, we push and we push… to make the lives of our citizens and the lives of our countries better,” Rama said, according to APE ΜΠΕ.

Bulgaria has blocked the formal start of Northern Macedonia’s EU accession process due to differences in history and language. Sofia also accused Skopje of hate speech and non-implementation of a 2017 bilateral friendship treaty.

“Our position is clear – European integration cannot be held hostage to bilateral relations.” Zaef stressed, referring to a dangerous precedent.

Albania’s efforts to start accession negotiations have also been delayed because the European Commission has said that Albania and Northern Macedonia must work together on their accession path to the Union.
