Ranking places 11 USP courses among the 50 best in the world

The University of São Paulo (USP) had 11 courses elected among the 50 best in the world, according to the new ranking of the “QS World University Ranking by Subject”, one of the main evaluations of higher education in the world.

The survey analyzed more than 1,500 institutions from 88 countries. In all, 44 areas of the São Paulo university were classified among the 51 analyzed by the ranking, released this week.

Among the specific areas, USP entered the top 50 in Dentistry (15th position); Minerals and Mines Engineering (31st); Petroleum Engineering (32nd); Geography (38th); Modern Languages ​​(41st); Veterinary Science (41st); Anthropology (42nd); Architecture (44th); Agriculture and Forestry (48th); Sports Science (49th), being the only Brazilian to appear on this list; and Sociology (49th).

In another 25 specific areas, USP ranked between 51st and 100th; in five other areas, among the top 150; and, in three areas, among the top 200.

“This year’s edition of the QS World University Rankings by Discipline provides some positive news for the Brazilian higher education sector: its flagship university, USP, continues to assert its status as a research powerhouse on the continent,” said Ben Sowter, QS Senior Vice President.

Among the criteria considered by the QS for the classification of courses are academic reputation and among employers, number of citations in scientific articles, international cooperation networks, among others.

The QS ranking is led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), followed by Oxford (UK) in 2nd, Stanford (US) and Cambridge (UK) tied for 3rd, and Harvard (USA). ) in 5th.

In the general list of universities, USP was in the 121st position. The placement is the same as last year and the best among the Brazilians.

Four other public institutions appear in the top 500 of the list: the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), in 219th; the Federal of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), in 369th; the Federal of São Paulo (Unifesp), in 434th; and the Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp), in 492nd.
