Rape in cesarean section reignites debate on pregnant women’s rights, experts say

The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro investigates anesthesiologist Giovanni Quintella Bezerra, caught raping a woman who was undergoing a cesarean section at the Hospital da Mulher, in São João de Meriti, in Baixada Fluminense. Another five women may also have been victims of sexual violence by the doctor, according to investigations.

The case illustrates a sad Brazilian reality: in 2021, a person was raped every ten minutes and 75% of cases involved vulnerable or disabled people.

In this episode of E Tem Mais Carol Nogueira brings the latest information about the Baixada Fluminense case and also talks with Fayda Belo, a criminal lawyer specializing in gender crimes, anti-discrimination law and femicides, about the possibilities of aggravating the crime and even other violations that the anesthetist may have committed against the victim.

The sexual assault suffered by women during childbirth also raises the debate about the practice of obstetric violence, a subject discussed in this episode with Ana Brocanelo, a lawyer specializing in civil, family and succession law.
