British-Nigerian rapper Skepta’s ‘Mama Goes to Market’ painting sold at contemporary art house auction Sotheby’s‘Contemporary Curated’ priced at £81,900.
The painting, which is the rapper’s first work, was originally painted by Skepta in 2020 over the course of a week. But later, she edited it again when she presented it at an event organized by French fashion house Givenchy in collaboration with graphic designer Chito. Chito would put his signature on all the items that the guests had brought with them, so the graphic designer’s symbol was added to the board, as well as his colleague Slawn and record producer and DJ Goldie reports APE-BPE.
The work depicts three African women, one of whom carries a child on her back. The auctioneers had estimated that it would sell for up to £60,000 but in the end it sold for £22,000 over the original estimate.
Although the buyer has not been made public, Mr rapper Skepta told the Financial Times that he hopes it is either American rapper, entrepreneur and producer Jay-Z or American stand-up comedian and actor Dave Chapelle.
