For the first time, a carangueira (Lobodon Carcinophaga), a typical species of the Subanthartal and Antarctic regions, was recorded on the southern coast of Santa Catarina.
The animal was spotted last Monday (12) and since then is being accompanied by the Santos Basin Beaches Monitoring Project (PMP-BS), UDESC.
Biologists Daniel Munhoz and Larissa Uema explain that, being a highly dependent animal of antarctic ice, this species does not usually migrate to warmer regions. Presence may be linked to climate change, which affect both ice availability As for the population of Krill – a factor that obliges the animal to travel longer distances in search of food.
In the case of an almost adult and healthy individual, the most plausible hypothesis for its presence on the coast of Santa Catarina would be an accidental drift.

Even in winter, the coast of Santa Catarina is considered hot for the species which has no adaptations for long migrations in tropical or subtropical seas.
The carangueira seal is the most abundant seal in the world, but extremely rare on the Brazilian coast. The appearance in southern Santa Catarina is considered unprecedented and relevant to science, according to the UDESC Zoology Laboratory.
