They were first discovered in 1787 when Swedish Lieutenant Lieutenant Carl Axel Arrhenius found a strange black stone near the village of Ytterby. The chemists of the time called it “rare land” because no one on the planet had seen anything similar. Since then, this characterization has been established and has been used to this day, two centuries later. So, are rare lands rare? Only in the name, because in practice they are found everywhere.
