Rare Ford Escort that once belonged to Princess Diana goes up for auction in England

A 1985 Ford Escort RS Turbo Series 1 that once belonged to Princess Diana of the British royal family goes up for auction in England later this month.

Silverstone Auctions. British auction house specializing in automobiles will offer the model during The Classic, one of the biggest classic motorsport festivals in the world, which will take place at the legendary Silverstone Circuit on August 27, just four days before Lady Di’s death turns 25. .

Despite numerous drivers and Rolls Royces at her disposal, Diana liked to drive and insisted on the model. Lady Di had previously worn an Escort Ghia in 1981, a wedding gift from Prince Charles.

SO14, the royal family’s special protection group, then asked Ford to paint the vehicle black, originally sold only in white, for the princess’ safety. In addition, Diana’s 1985 Escort also had a large reinforced front end and a rear-view mirror in the passenger seat, used by the accompanying bodyguard.

According to the auction house, this is believed to be the only black model of the vehicle in existence and was used by Diana between 1985 and 1988, returned to Ford with about 11,000 kilometers driven.

The vehicle was purchased by a member of the company and used by his wife, before being raffled off by Kiss FM radio in 1993. After so long, today the Escort has run over 40,000 km, but is still in excellent condition, says the Silverstone Auctions.

The auction house expects the vehicle to sell for more than six figures. Bids may be placed in person or via the Silverstone Auctions website.
