Amateur scientists recorded the entry of a large magnitude meteor in the atmosphere from an observation station in Santa Maria, in Rio Grande do Sul. The recording took place at 0:13 am this Monday (25).
Fireball meteors, like this one, get their name because they have a strong brightness. The brightness is explained by the fact that these meteors are fragments of a comet of high magnitude.
These objects are accompanied by a persistent luminous trail, called a “trail”, which may remain visible for a few seconds after the meteor passes.
The observation was made by cameras from the Bate-Papo Astronomico project, a group of amateur scientists who aim to promote science through online and in-person events. At the meetings, astronomical observations and lectures are made.
Installed at Santa Maria Tecnoparque, the station is part of the Brazilian Meteor Monitoring Network (Bramon). The organization is supported by volunteers and operates a network for monitoring meteors, producing and providing scientific data to the community through the analysis of its captures.
