Rare signed copy of ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ sells for £225,000

Its unique version is sold for 225,000 pounds novel “The Catcher in the Rye” signed by its author, Jerome David Salinger with his childhood nickname, Sonny.

It is said that Salinger was bitter at his friends and family cashing in on the success of his 1951 novel and as a result signed copies of ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ were not released into the book market.

The book from Peter Harrington Books is being sold as part of the ‘Firsts’ rare book fair, which is being held at the Saatchi Gallery in London from 15 to 18 September.

Pom Harrington, owner of Peter Harrington Books, according to a report in “The Guardian” newspaper, said that this copy is one of two of the first edition signed by the author. Salinger gave it to family friend Ann Agus and dedicated it to her grandsons Charles and William, APE-BPE reports.

Other items for sale in the exhibition are letters between George Orwell and his publisher Victor Gollancz, detailing a police raid on the author’s home during which they seized a copy of Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer. A first edition of ‘De Revolutionibus Orbium’ (On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres) by Nicolaus Copernicus has been sold for two million British pounds.
