Rare wave of protests exposes doubts about future of government in China

Major cities in China have been the scene of the country’s biggest series of demonstrations since the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989. Demonstrators protest against restrictions imposed by the Chinese government’s Covid-zero policy and express dissatisfaction with limitations on democracy and to individual freedoms.

The protests began after a fire in the city of Urumqi in the Xinjiang region left ten people dead. Local residents attributed the deaths to movement restrictions in the region imposed by the government to control the pandemic.

In this episode of E Tem Mais, Carol Nogueira presents a balance of reactions and doubts about the possible effects of the rare wave of protests registered in China in recent days.
