RAS invited Hellenic Train to a hearing regarding the delays/cancellations of Suburban trains

By Fotis Fotinos

Hellenic Train (formerly TRAINOSE) was summoned to a hearing by the Railway Regulatory Authority, due to the lack of attention that, as the Authority maintains, the company showed in the request to provide information on the cancellations and delays of routes on the Athens and Thessaloniki Suburban Railway.

In particular, Hellenic Train is called, before the RAS Hearing Committee, for violating the provision of article 28 (par. 5 L. 3891/2010), as it did not proceed with the immediate provision of information and data requested by the Railway Regulatory Authority, in order to provide explanations for the reasons for canceled/delayed routes, and at the same time to communicate an action plan to restore the smooth operation of the railway project.

The intervention of the president of RAS, Ioanna Tsiaparikou, took place with the notification of a relevant document on July 21, 2022, in which it is underlined, among other things, that “the aforementioned requests to the company are made at a time when the Railway Market Regulation and Control Unit RAS receives a large number of passenger complaints regarding delays and cancellations of routes, which tend to become permanent”.

However, Hellenic Train, as reported by the Authority, did not respond in any way to the written request, as it did not provide any information, both on the reasons for the delay and cancellation of the routes, and on the action plan based on which it would explain, when and how, the railway project will be normalized.

Hellenic Train’s hearing before the special Three-Member Hearing Committee of RAS will take place in the near future.

According to passenger complaints, in July, several Suburban routes were canceled on the lines Athens – Chalkida, Ano Liosia – Kantza and Aigio – Kiato and vice versa, as well as to and from “El. Venizelos” airport, which – on a case by case basis – were carried out by buses.

In addition to the above case, RAS announced, a few days ago, that it is proceeding with an ex officio investigation, regarding the grounding of the new Hellenic Train trains that took place recently.
