British cartoonist Raymond Briggs has died at the age of 88, his family announced on Wednesday. Briggs’ best-known work is “The Snowman”, a wordless picture book that has enchanted generations.
The illustrator leaves a legacy that also includes the hilarious and feisty Santa Claus and a comic book based on the lives of his parents, Ethel and Ernest.
“Raymond was a brilliantly observant and funny storyteller, honest about what life is like rather than how adults want to tell it to children. A kindness, integrity and generosity permeate all of his books,” Francesca Dow, Managing Director, Penguin Random House, said in the family’s statement.
“Raymond was unique. He has inspired generations of picture book, comic and animation creators. He leaves an extraordinary legacy and a huge gap.”
Several of his books have won the television screens, “When the Wind Blows” has also been staged in the theater. Briggs has twice won the Kate Greenaway Medal for illustration and her book Ug was the winner of the Nestlé Smarties Silver Award. Melancholy and old age were themes of the work “Time for Lights Out”, from 2019.
