Razzie Awards 2023: between Pinocchio and Blonde, the nominations of the anti-Oscars

Hollywood, as we know, has a great sense of humour, and that’s why the day before the announcement of the Oscar nominations, those of the Razzie Awards, that is, the prizes that are awarded to the worst films and performances seen at the cinema during the year, even if it happened in past years that certain titles competed both at the Razzie and at the Oscars, showing us how personal and subjective the tastes of the voting commissions are. For the 2023 Razzie Awards we are sad to see that the nominations are dominated by a misunderstood film like Blonde, Andrew Dominik’s title dedicated to the fictionalized life of Marilyn Monroe which has perhaps not been well understood by either the public or the critics. The ups and downs of Marilyn that she brought to life Ana De Armas – which fortunately is not nominated for Worst Actress – were framed by Dominik essentially following the decline and sexual obsession, choosing to leave out the extraordinary novel by Joyce Carol Oates from which the film is based (for those wishing to recover it, in Italy it publishes La Nave di Teseo) the part of the apprenticeship, the hunger for success and the corruption of the star-system.

Having said that, it must be said that many other titles selected by the Razzie Awards deserved the nomination. How Disney’s live-action Pinocchio directed by Robert Zemeckissomewhat opaque and kitsch version of Carlo Collodi’s masterpiece adapted and rewritten so wonderfully by Guillermo Del Toro, but also as the last chapter of the new saga of Jurassic Park who, while counting on the return of some actors from the original trilogy such as Laura Dern, failed to go beyond the special effects, greatly disappointing the fans who hoped to crown Jurassic World: Domination as one of the titles to watch for the future. Among the other candidates, however, we also point out the disastrous one Morbius with Jared Leto, the third chapter of the saga of 365 days with our Michele Morrone, and even elvis, the film directed by Baz Luhrmann which gives Tom Hanks the nomination for Worst Supporting Actor – bad year for Hanks, who in these Razzie also competes as Worst Actor for the aforementioned Pinocchio -.

However, another candidate raised the controversy at home: that of 12-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong, star of Firestartersas Worst Actress. According to some, the nomination of such a young girl was unfair, given that the possible Razzie Awards could harm her career by acting as a deterrent for her next roles and her next experiences. However, it must be said that in the past the Razzies have never overshadowed the reputation of much more well-known and, if we may say so, much more touchy performers: not all films and not all performances come out with the hole and, perhaps, the manner smarter to face them is simply to laugh about how Tananai did a bit in Sanremo and think about the next production, with the hope this time of ending up more in the good graces of the Academy which awards the Oscars than in that of the Raspberry Foundation which awards the Razzies .
