Reality of autistic people is different from that portrayed in movies, says expert

The reality of a person on the autistic spectrum is “different from what is portrayed in movies,” according to attorney and CEO of Autism Legal, Carla Bertin.

In an interview with CNN radio, in CNN in Plural, she highlighted that, unlike fiction, the idea that autistic people are always geniuses or that they have intellectual disabilities is not correct.

“We don’t know autism and when we get the news of a diagnosis, it has a big impact, as parents we are worried about autonomy, independence and adult life”, said she, who has a son on the spectrum.

“Once we learn, we understand that it is like an operating system different from a cell phone. They both work and have basically the same functions, but if you’re used to Apple’s, for example, you’ll have a hard time understanding Android,” he explained.

Carla says that, in general, an autistic person has differences related to language and communication, difficulty in expressing themselves and understanding others, in addition to having restricted interests.

“The sooner you identify the signs, the better, to start therapies and help in development, with neuropediatricians, for example”, he warned.

According to her, “the autism spectrum has several nuances, from the mildest, with little commitment, to the very much, each autistic is unique.”

Some are able to talk, some are not, at first it is difficult to know exactly how to relate, more contact is needed, but respect and affection always open doors.

The CEO of Autism Legal also recalled that autistic people have many rights since a 2004 law that placed people with autism within the definition of someone with a disability.

“This changed the reality of the autistic community, it gave access to rights such as in the area of education, with a specialized companion, adaptation of content, discount on the air ticket for the companion, adequate and intensive treatment, right to medication, discount on the electricity bill, half -entry, PCD vacancy, among others.”
