Reassuring authorities on bird flu: No human-to-human transmission detected in Cambodia

The case of its transmission bird flu from man to man, after the cases of a man diagnosed that he contracted the virus after the death of his daughter, who was also infectedthe Cambodian health authorities ruled out.

Research indicated that he contracted the virus through contact with a bird in the village. No father-daughter transmission was found“, the government’s epidemiological surveillance agency reported yesterday Tuesday (2/28).

The 49-year-old man, who was asymptomatic, was diagnosed as cured and discharged from hospital, according to the statement.

THE Cambodia recorded on February 23 the first death in nine years due to bird flu. The victim was an 11-year-old girl who lived in Prey Veng Province (southeast). She was confirmed to be infected with the H5N1 strain, highly contagious to birds, as was her father a few days later.

The two cases, as reported by the Athens News Agency citing AFP, have raised concerns amid the bird flu epidemic in several regions of the world, which has led to the killing of tens of millions of birds.

Outbreaks have also been reported in mammals and, more rarely, in humans.

The virus is transmitted to humans most often through direct contact with infected farmed birds.

On Friday, the World Health Organization (WHO) spoke of a “worrying situation” regarding bird flu, reminding, however, that the risk to humans remains comparatively low.

In the past 20 years, 868 cases of H5N1 in humans have been recorded by the WHO, 457 of which were fatal.
