Rebelde: new version of the Mexican series debuts with a Brazilian protagonist

Premieres this Wednesday (5), on Netflix, the new version of the teen series “Rebel”. A mix of remake and continuation, the Mexican production recovers the Elite Way School and the teenage dramas that were successful throughout Latin America in the early 2000s. For Brazilians, the attraction has an interest in its own right: Emília Alo, one of the protagonists , is lived by the actress Giovanna Gray, from “Malhação: Viva a Diferença” and “As Five”.

Abandoning the telenovela format and assuming the genre of the series, the new “Rebelde” modernizes the conflicts and relationships between the group of high school students, addressing issues such as gender identity, neutral pronouns and social inequality.

The production has several musical numbers, with a plot dedicated to the battle of the school’s bands. The opening theme is still the same, interpreted by the original RBD.

Emilia, Giovanna’s character, is a Brazilian who moves to Mexico and is enrolled at the Elite Way School, now an educational reference. Digital influencer, preppy and insecure about the change, starts the series with a villain air.

The characters Jana (Azul Guaita), Estebán (Sérgio Mayer Mori), Sebas (Alejandro Puente), MJ (Andrea Chaparro), Luka (Franco Masini), Dixon (Jeronimo Cantillo) and Andi (Lizeth Selene) also star in “Rebelde”.

The most famous version of the work was produced by the Mexican company Televisa between 2004 and 2006, and has immortalized characters such as Dulce María and Anahí in the memory of viewers. Some of the supporting figures in the original production return in the Netflix season: Celina Ferrer (played by Estefanía Villarreal) is now the school’s principal, and Pilar Gandia (played by Karla Cossío) is Luka’s mother.

In 2011, Record produced a Brazilian version of the series, which revealed actors such as Chay Suede e Sophia Abrahão. Also successful, the soap opera lasted two seasons.
