The City of Recife announced, this Wednesday (5), the suspension of the official program for this year’s Carnival. The measure was taken by the increase in cases of influenza in the city.
The opinion comes after the decision to cancel the street Carnival by the Municipality of Olinda (PE).
“Recife is facing an expressive growth of flu cases and understands, as always, that the priority for this one –and at any time– will always be the preservation of health and life”, says the municipal administration in a note.
Even with the advance in vaccination against Covid-19, reaching 83% of the population over 12 years old with the complete regimen, the rates of infection by H3N2 have risen too high. On December 27 alone, 314 cases were registered. So far, there have been 2,451 diagnoses of the disease and 17 deaths.
With the situation, the Municipal Health Department intensified the vaccination against flu in the city, making it available at health posts, in five shopping malls and in itinerant actions throughout the capital. More than 525,000 doses have already been applied.
Mayor João Campos (PSB) announced, last Monday (5), the opening of 40 beds, 30 in the infirmary and ten in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), for the treatment of SSevere Acute Respiratory Indrome (SRAG), caused by influenza, at Hospital Eduardo Campos da Pessoa Idosa (HECPI), in the district of Areias.
Eleven capitals have already canceled the Carnival: Campo Grande, Cuiabá, Teresina, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador, Rio de Janeiro (only the street Carnival), Florianópolis, Curitiba (will be held online), São Luís and now Recife .
