The capital of Pernambuco may again record storms throughout the week, after heavy rains that have left 84 deaths in the state so far.
According to the system of the National Center for Monitoring and Alerts of Natural Disasters (Cemaden), nine municipalities in the metropolitan region of Recife are classified at very high risk for rains and landslides. There is a possibility that the rains will intensify in the coming days.
According to Giovani Dolif, Cemaden’s replacement operations and modeling coordinator, the atmospheric situation remains unstable as it was last week, allowing for the formation of heavy rain nuclei.
“The month of May is when we start to have a significant increase in rainfall on the northeast coast, which extends until August. In Recife, we already had 600 mm of rain in May, double the average for the month. The region’s rains are fast, but concentrated, and are concentrated between dawn and morning,” he explains.
The region was already on high risk alert since last Monday (23). On Saturday morning, the level went very high. Last Thursday (26), the National Civil Defense warned of the possibility of heavy rains on the northeast coast.
In an interview with CNN , the mayor of Recife, João Campos (PSB), said that this is an “extremely challenging time” and the phenomenon is something “completely out of the ordinary”. “It is up to us to be able to work to reduce the impacts of people and to be able to take care of the city”.
