The United Nations (UN) passed a resolution that considers a clean, healthy and sustainable environment a human right.
The document warns that the world will suffer the exacerbated effects of environmental crises if something is not done now to avoid them.
In an interview with CNN Radio the lawyer specializing in human rights and international law, Victoriana Gonzaga, said that the UN decision has “symbolic and political effect”, in addition to being “historical.”
“In practice, in terms of international systems of protection, the UN does not make decisions that are binding on states, unlike the Security Council, but member states are guided and inspired by action.”
According to her, there is a “consensus creation”, which brings “impact in the domestic sphere and gives political weight, robustness in civil society and guides public policies.”
Victoriana recalls that a WHO report pointed out that 23% of deaths in the world are related to environmental issues and, with the resolution, people will be able to understand that they must “resort and fight for the right to a healthy environment and use instruments to protect international law”. .”
The message of protecting the environment is “more rigorous”, which strengthens the global litigation to “advance the socio-environmental protection laws”, he defended.
According to the expert, “the resolution called on states, international organizations and companies, as well as other actors and decision-makers, to adopt policies” in relation to environmental protection.
