The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, visited Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris this Friday (29). He paid one last visit before reopening the historic landmark, which was devastated by a fire in 2019.
The church has been under construction for more than five years and will welcome the public again next week.
Macron took advantage of the occasion to give a speech in honor of the workers involved in the reconstruction.
“We have never seen a construction site like this. You all participated in the construction project of the century”, highlighted the French president.
At the moment, Emmanuel Macron, who became emotional, thanked the employees for helping to “keep the promise to rebuild Notre-Dame in five years”.
“You guys did it. And this is an immense source of pride for the entire nation. I am infinitely grateful, France is infinitely grateful (for this),” he continued.
“You turned ashes into art,” Macron declared to the crowd, which included more than 1,300 people who worked on repair efforts and were gathered inside the cathedral.
The French leader said he was “very happy”. Macron’s Office commented that it also invited people who donated to the project.
The formal reopening of Notre-Dame will take place on December 7th and the first public mass will be held the following day.
