Anyone looking to buy a ticket to Taylor Swift’s new tour might be out of luck.
Ticketmaster said on Thursday that “due to unusually high demands on ticketing systems and insufficient stock of tickets to meet this demand”, public ticket sales for the Eras Tour have been canceled on Friday. (18).
The sudden cancellation comes after Ticketmaster said on Thursday that more than two million tickets had been sold on Tuesday for the tour – the most ever sold for one artist in a single day. This caused their website to nearly crash.
In a blog post on Thursday, Ticketmaster explained that a “record number of fans” wanted to buy tickets for the Eras Tour, which kicks off next year. This sparked a major downturn on their platform and sparked outrage among their millions of fans who were unable to purchase tickets.
Ticketmaster basically said that its “Verified Fans” system, a mechanism designed to weed out bots that give individuals pre-sale codes, has failed to keep up with the intense demand. About 3.5 million people signed up for the program to buy tickets to see the singer, her “biggest record in history”.
That unprecedented demand, combined with a “staggering number of bot attacks, as well as fans who didn’t have invite codes,” drove “unprecedented traffic” to its site, Ticketmaster said, and essentially broke it.
“Never before has a verified fan on sale driven so much attention – or uninvited volume,” Ticketmaster said in the blog post. “This has disrupted the predictability and reliability that are the hallmark of our Verified Fans platform,” the company said.
On Tuesday morning, Ticketmaster told CNN that the site “wasn’t down” and that “people are actively buying tickets”. He added that “there was historically unprecedented demand, with millions turning up” to buy tickets for Swift’s tour.
The disaster not only sparked outrage among the star’s fans, but also drew the ire of politicians. Senator Amy Klobuchar criticized Ticketmaster in an open letter to its CEO, saying she has “serious concerns” about the company’s operations.
