Record number of new coronavirus cases in Denmark and Iceland

Denmark and Iceland today announced a new record daily Covid-19 cases, which may mean that the wave of infections associated with the new Omicron variant of the coronavirus has not yet reached its peak in both countries.

Norway, for its part, announced that the new variant of the coronavirus is henceforth the prevailing one in the capital, Oslo.

In Denmark, the number of infections reported within 24 hours reached a new high with 16,164 positive tests, exceeding 15,000 for the first time since the pandemic began, according to official figures from health authorities.

The positive rate of the tests exceeded 12%, something that has not happened again in the country of 5.8 million inhabitants, which decided in mid-December to ‘close’ the cultural life and shorten the opening hours of bars and restaurants.

Denmark, one of the countries with the best equipment for sequencing variants, announced before Christmas that Omicron is now dominant in the country.

Hospitalizations continue to rise, with 608 patients being treated with Covid-19, but remain far from the record set last January (964), mainly due to the protective effect of vaccines, according to epidemiologists. The number of deaths is also increasing slowly (+7 within 24 hours).

In Iceland, which like Denmark was ahead of the Omicron wave among the countries in Europe with the fewest Covid infections by population, 672 infections were reported today in 24 hours, a record.

During the wave of autumn 2020, the peak did not exceed one hundred infections per day, and by mid-December the limit of 200 infections per day had never been exceeded.

The North Atlantic island (370,000 inhabitants) had tightened measures against Covid-19 last Tuesday, mainly reducing the number of people allowed to gather at 20 to 50 so far.

The region of Europe has the highest number of infections in the world with 2,901,073 in the last seven days (55% of the total worldwide), as well as the most deaths with 24,287 deaths last week (53% of the total) followed by the USA / Canada region (10,269.22%).
