The number of people infected with the new coronavirus in the UK has reached record levels, according to estimates released today, the day on which the free test under the strategy aimed at coexisting with the virus ends.
Based on a representative sample of the population, the National Statistics Office (ONS) estimates that 4.9 million people became infected with coronavirus in the last week compared to 4.3 million in the first week of the year, which was the previous record in country of 67 million inhabitants.
About 700,000 more people were infected compared to the previous week, according to the study, which is considered more reliable than daily statistics based on patients’ willingness or unwillingness to get tested and report their results to authorities.
