Record wind energy production in the Nordic countries

Wind energy production in the Nordic countries hit a record 20.8 gigawatts (GW) on Thursday afternoon, according to Refinitiv analysts, amid storms and after a sharp expansion of installed capacity last year, as reported by Reuters.

Wind turbine production in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland has reached a new high, according to Refinitiv.

Earlier in the day, wind power production had already reached a new high of 20.3 GW, according to data provided by Refinitiv analysts to Reuters.

Extreme weather events with torrential rains and strong gusts of wind hit western and northern Norway on Wednesday and Thursday, where most of the country’s wind farms are located. Denmark and parts of the Baltic Sea also saw strong winds.

Norwegian wind power increased by 659 MW to 4,656 MW last year, according to preliminary data from the NVE regulator.

In neighboring Sweden, capacity was projected to increase by 2,220 MW to 12,300 MW in 2021, according to the latest available data from the Swedish Wind Energy Association.

Installed wind power in Finland increased by 671 megawatts (MW) to 3,257 MW, according to data released Wednesday by the Finnish Wind Energy Association.

Installed capacity in Denmark increased by 714 MW by the end of August compared to December 2020, to a total of 6,892 MW, according to data from the Danish Wind Energy Association.

High wind power has also pushed down wholesale electricity prices, with the area delivery system reference price on Thursday at 33.92 euros per megawatt hour (MWh), the lowest level since November 20th.
