The Ministry of Economy raised the GDP forecast in 2022 from 1.5% to 2%, a level that was expected for this year’s economic activity at the end of 2021. to CNN Brazil this Sunday (17), former finance minister Mailson da Nóbrega said that the update reflects the recovery of personal services.
“The increase in the GDP forecast is a reflection of a set of factors, especially the recovery of the services segment, particularly personal services”, highlighted the economist.
According to him, when a virus such as Covid-19 and the Spanish flu appears in the world, it is natural for a subsequent economic recovery to be based on the service sector.
“Whenever the economy starts to return to normal, there is a surge in demand for services. People are tired of staying at home, with restrictions on locomotion, so they start to consume more trips to the theatre, cinema, stadiums and travel,” he said.
The former minister, however, said he was less optimistic than the government’s projection, due to the impact of the interest rate hike on the country’s economic activity.
“The government’s projection does not differ much from that made by financial institutions and consultancies, but I believe that we will have a very complicated second half, because the effects of monetary policy will begin to appear more intensely, with the increase in the Selic”, he concluded. .
