The president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Peter Maurer, warned today of the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, which could lead to “deaths and the destruction of a scale that is frightening to deal with.”
“I am now afraid of a worsening of the trials, with the possibility of a huge number of casualties and significant damage to political infrastructure (…), as well as mass deportations, injuries, family separations and disappearances,” he said in a written statement.
“Civilians and vital infrastructure, such as water and electricity networks, in Ukraine must be protected from attack, in accordance with the law of war,” he said.
The president of the ICRC, in the statement issued after Russia started the invasion of Ukraine and hit big cities with missiles, said:
“The use of weapons with large-scale effects should be avoided in residential areas.”
“The necessary infrastructure must be safeguarded, including water, gas and electricity systems, which, for example, supply civilian homes, schools and medical facilities with vital water and electricity. Attacks “New technologies and cyber-instruments must also respect international humanitarian law.”
