The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has said it understands that evacuations of civilians from Mariupol and Volnovacha to Ukraine will not begin on Saturday due to the conflict in the country, Reuters reported.
“We remain in dialogue with the parties regarding the safe passage of civilians from various cities affected by the conflict,” the ICRC said in a statement.
“Scenes in Mariupol and other cities today are shocking. Any initiative by the parties to give civilians a break from the violence and allow them to leave voluntarily for safer areas is welcome.”
The Ukrainian government has previously stated that the plan calls for the evacuation of some 200,000 people from Mariupol and 15,000 from Volnovakha and that the ICC is the guarantor of the ceasefire.
