Reduction in the price of fuel at the pump should not reach 20%, says specialist

Part of the reduction in the international price of oil should be reversed in Brazil by the damming of prices that Petrobras has been practicing, said economist Edmilson Moutinho, a professor at the Institute of Energy and Environment at the University of São Paulo (USP), during an interview with CNN this Monday (6).

For the expert, the reduction “should not reach 20%” in refineries. “The increase itself was delayed because Petrobras needs to replace part of what it had not been able to pass on due to political pressure”, he assesses.

“If there was a drop in the refinery of 12% to 15%, it would surprise me, and we won’t find that in the pump”, adds Moutinho.

In 2022, the trend is for the price of oil to pick up, with the possibility of a slowdown in the potential of the Ômicron variant and an increase in global demand, says the expert.

He also points out that prices are heavily influenced by the temperature in the northern hemisphere, which this month enters winter, when it starts to recruit more energy to heat the population.

For this reason, the increase in prices should only happen after January, according to the economist, but last for a few months, at least until the end of the cold season in the North, in April.

For him, this recovery in price increases tends to have an important political impact in Brazil. “This poses more difficulties for President Jair Bolsonaro, because we will be closer to the electoral cycle”, he says.
