Kazakhs go to the polls today in a referendum on building the first nuclear power plant in the Central Asian country, which is the world’s biggest uranium producer but has a shortage of electricity. The polls opened at 06:00 (local time, 03:00 Greek time) and will close at 20:00, as announced by the Electoral Commission. France, through EDF, is among those interested in building the plant, along with Russia and China, the region’s two biggest powers, as well as South Korea. According to President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, it will be “the biggest project in the history of independent Kazakhstan” if it is approved – of which there is no doubt.
