Where politics fails to make a difference, it is art that seeks a way to unite cultures and support a country on its knees. Hence the decision to turn the lights back on Reflection (Vidblysk)the film by the Ukrainian director Valentyn Vasjanovyč presented in competition at the 78th Venice International Film Festival which will land at the cinema thanks to two free screeningsone planned Monday 7 March at 7.10 pm at the Troisi Cinema of Rome and the other Wednesday 9 March at 8 pm at the Anteo Cinema of Milan, introduced respectively by the President of the Biennale Roberto Cicutto and by the Director of the Exhibition Alberto Barbera.
Reflection
The initiative, developed in collaboration with the Italian distributor Wanted and the Troisi and Anteo cinemas, it is a small sign of solidarity with the filmmakers and all the Ukrainian people, paying homage to a raw and intimate story set during the 2014 Donbass War, amid the diplomatic-military clash between Russia and Ukraine for control of Crimea and Donbass. The film, che follows the vicissitudes of the Ukrainian surgeon Serhiy (Roman Lutskiy), captured by Russian military forces during the 2014 war in Donbass, will then arrive in all cinemas starting March 18, after another special screening scheduled for Thursday 10 March at 9 pm at the Rossini Cinema in Venice, introduced by Federico Gironi.
Reflection
Among the many topics addressed in Reflection also the horror and inhuman violence of war – also present in Vasjanovyč’s previous film, Atlantiswinner of the Award for the best film in the Orizzonti section at the 2019 Venice Film Festival -, and the personal journey of a man forced to witness the violence and indifference towards life by the invaders, struggling to return to everyday life to rebuild his relationship with his daughter and ex-wife. Vasyanovich recently stated that, for the time being, he will remain in Kiev: «I want to be among people aware of their ethnic, cultural and political affiliation. I want to be among these people to gain important experiences that will help me create true stories about them ».
