In the region of Baixo Rio Negro, in Manaus, an innovative project is transforming the landscape and life of local communities. The Institute of Ecological Research (IPê) leads an initiative that aims to restore degraded areas and strengthen riverside communities through sustainable solutions.
Since 2024, the project has flourished in the Amazon, with the ambitious mission of recovering 200 hectares of degraded areas in a sustainable development reserve. This year, more than 7,000 native tree seedlings were transported, including species such as Jatobá and Castanheira.
“All species chosen were of interest to the communities, as well as the techniques that involve ecological restoration. All thought for the benefit of the community,” says program coordinator Paulo Roberto Ferro.

Conservation and Local Development
The initiative is not just limited to ecological restoration. It also promotes food security and income generation for 18 traditional communities in the region. Residents participate in courses that enable them to collect and identify seeds, seedling production and market connection. An important action, as about 50% of the conservation unit inhabitants live with less than one minimum wage.
For the coordinator, the project demonstrates itself as an example capable of creating a productive and environmentally balanced area, taking advantage of the potential of Amazonian species and the traditional knowledge of residents. “We also brought together a concept of agroforestry systems, which includes not only logging species, but also fruit and agricultural.
Another interesting aspect of this work is the production of seedlings within the Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS), through community nurseries. This practice is essential for the conservation of biodiversity and the preservation of local genetic heritage, ”says Ferro.
